The blades of the chopper begin to turn as you buckle into your seat. There are only five passengers on this helicopter along with a pilot, so you have a window seat for three to look down upon the incredible scenery below. The blades turn faster and faster as your pilot give you the “thumbs up” as you lift off into the sky.

The journey to and from Mt. Everest takes only four hours, but what an incredible four hours it is. The bird rises over Kathmandu and then flies eastward, following the backbone of the mighty Himalayas.

Taking pictures re-board the helicopter and fly around Mt. Everest by way of Gokyo Lakes and Valley. There is a stop at Mt. Kalapathar (Elev. 5,300 m) where the chopper stops for close-up pictures of the world’s highest mountain. After the sightseeing this trip stops for breakfast at the World Class Everest View Hotel where you dine with Mt. Everest standing majestically in the background. Once you finish your breakfast and the flight return to Lukla and then to Kathmandu.

Day 01: Everest Helicopter TourDetails of Everest Helicopter TourThe flight beings in the morning as the skies are the clearest then, making for the best pictures. The bird lifts off from Tribhuvan International Airport and flies to the Everest airport at Lukla where it stops to refuel. Your representative at Himalayan Planet Adventures will pick you up at your hotel and take you directly to the airport.

As the chopper lifts off, it takes an easterly course, and within about few minutes, stops at Lukla for refueling. Here, stretch your legs as you gaze at the mighty mountains of the Himalayas. Re-board the helicopter and fly to Gokyo. After Gokyo overfly we landed at Pheriche to shuttle. We need 2 shuttles if the passengers are more than 3 persons for Kalapathar touch (max. weight is 240 KG to land at Kalapathar).

The flight begins again all passengers and head this time over the Gokyo Valley. This beautiful green valley features several turquoise blue lakes that are considered sacred to the people who live here. There are beautiful terraced farms that rise upwards on the lower mountainsides. How anyone could have made this region productive for farming boggles the imagination. The Sherpa people who call this land “home” have proven themselves to be amazingly resilient in their efforts to procure a living in this harsh land.

The flight continues past a number of high mountains before landing at Mt. Kala Patthar (Elevation at 5,300 m) which will offer you a wonderful close-up view of Mt. Everest to the northeast. The chopper circles Everest Base Camp and then returns to Pheriche for lifting another people and same sights again. After the sightseeing around, Everest Himalayas we stop for breakfast at Hotel Everest View, Syangboche together. Situated at 3800 meters, it is a World Class Hotel that features Mt. Everest for its backdrop. The food is fabulous at Everest View Hotel as you sip your hot tea or coffee while hardly taking your eyes off Mt. Everest. The breakfast time at hotel Everest view is about 45 minutes. Then we fly to Lukla for refueling once more. From here, it is back to Kathmandu.

The entire flying experience takes about 3.15 hrs but including breaks, it takes approx 4.35 hours. You leave at 7.30 am and return around 12.05 pm. It’s fast, easy but most especially, incredibly beautiful. There is no better way to see Mt. Everest than from a helicopter!

Thus said, this flight can be taken any time of year.  Summer monsoons (mid-June through Mid-September) may limit visibility from time to time, but if the weather is good, the choppers are flying.
