Trip overview

One of the most extraordinary ways to truly experience the incredible journey to the roof of the World is to follow the traditional trail as taken by Sir Edmund Hillary and his team for their epic 1953 climb of Mt. Everest. This journey follows the path of the great mountain climbers as you make your way through quaint villages with stunning views of Mt. Everest and the region of Sagarmatha National Park.

Today, most Everest trekkers come by way of Lukla airport. While this way may save you some days on the trail, you miss some of the unspoiled areas that surround Mt. Everest.

The journey will take you from Jiri, the jumping-off point for the early expeditions into the High Himalayas. It takes you past amazing farms and villages of the Sherpa people as well as over fast-flowing, mountain streams of pure, crystal clear cold water that is glacier-fed.

There is an opportunity to climb the trekking peak of Mt. Kala Patthar (Elev. 5550 m) as you make your way toward your ultimate destination of Everest Base Camp where the epic climb up Mt. Everest began. The Mt. Kala Patthar climb is not difficult and is ideal for the baby boomer generation as well as others to stand and to view the awesome snowcapped peaks of the Everest region.

Since the 1950s, the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek has been the preferred way to go and see Everest Base Camp as well as to totally immerse oneself in the incredible Sherpa culture.  The Jiri to Everest Base Camp treks, along with many other Everest treks are available through Himalayan Planet Adventures. Call or write Himalayan Planet Adventures today to learn more about the Jiri to Everest Base Camp trek.

We pass interesting villages as well as Buddhist stupas and chhortens until we reach our tea-house at the village of Bhandar. It’s a cold water are fed by melting glaciers as it quickly drops in elevation on its way southward toward the warm waters of the Bay of Bengal. In this area, you will have an opportunity to encounter the Rai people as there are a number of their villages in this area. The Rai are tribal groups that have long resided in the mountains, retaining their distinct language and culture. Like the Sherpa people, they are very friendly and welcoming of visitors. The trek to Bupsadanda is a bit steep and will challenge us, but it can be done. We will spend the evening at a tea house in Bupsadanda.

From up here, you will see Everest Base Camp as well as many more mountain peaks. • 20 Days
GORAKSHEP TO EVEREST BASE CAMP (Elev. 5,364 m) AND RETURN TO GORAKSHEP

The journey will take you along the famed Khumbu Icefall. Today will be a strenuous journey as you make your way up to Everest Base Camp. The air is thin here at such high altitudes.
