Trekking Guide
Everything you need to know
Trip Grades
This is a Leisure to Moderate cultural tour. The majority of the itinerary involves scenic drives and guided walks through flat or gently sloping historical sites. The only strenuous physical activity is the hike to Tiger's Nest on Day 5, which classifies the latter part of the trip as moderate.
Physical Requirement and Health
Travelers should be in good general health. While the sightseeing requires minimal exertion, you will be walking around expansive dzongs, temples, and uneven cobblestone streets. The hike to Tiger's Nest requires a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness, as it involves a steep ascent over uneven dirt trails at high altitude.
Training program
Specific athletic training is not required. However, to fully enjoy the Tiger's Nest hike, we recommend engaging in regular cardiovascular exercises (like brisk walking, jogging, or cycling) and leg-strengthening exercises 3 to 4 weeks prior to your arrival. Practicing on hilly terrain or using a stair-climber will be highly beneficial.
Age Limit
There is no strict age limit for this cultural tour. It is suitable for young children and senior citizens alike. For elderly travelers or those with mobility issues, an optional pony ride is available for the lower section of the Tiger's Nest hike (up to the cafeteria).
Group size
We accommodate solo travelers up to large groups of 25. For the most engaging and personalized experience, a small group size of 2 to 8 people is ideal. We utilize SUVs for 1-2 passengers, H1 vans for 3-4, HiAce buses for 5-8, and Coaster buses for larger groups.
Best time to visit
The optimal windows for this tour are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). Spring offers blooming rhododendrons and mild temperatures. Autumn boasts the clearest skies for Himalayan views. Winter (December to February) brings cold nights but crisp, sunny days. Summer (June to August) is the monsoon season, bringing heavy rains that can obscure views and disrupt road travel.
Visa Information
All international tourists (except passport holders from India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives) require a visa to enter Bhutan. Himalayan Planet Adventures Pvt. Ltd. processes this visa on your behalf. A clear, color scan of your passport (valid for at least six months from your travel date) is required to secure the visa clearance prior to your flight.
Necessary Permits
Your Bhutan visa clearance includes the standard route permits necessary to travel between Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha. All entry permits for specific dzongs, temples, and the Tiger's Nest are pre-arranged by our team and managed by your guide.
Insurance details
Travel insurance is mandatory and must be purchased in your home country before the trip. Your policy must cover comprehensive medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and trip cancellation. Providers like World Nomads, Allianz, or your local national insurance broker offer excellent global coverage for Himalayan regions.
Transportation and/or Domestic Flight
All internal transportation is strictly overland. Depending on your group size, we provide comfortable, well-maintained vehicles ranging from 5-seater SUVs to 19-seater Coaster buses. All vehicles are operated by experienced local drivers accustomed to navigating winding mountain roads.
Packaging and Luggage Information
Pack in layers. Days can be warm and sunny, while mornings and evenings are noticeably cooler, especially in Paro and Thimphu. Modest dress is strictly required for entering dzongs and temples (long trousers or skirts, long sleeves, and closed shoes). Bring a sturdy pair of hiking boots or trail shoes for the Tiger's Nest hike.
Accommodation, meals, and water
Accommodation ranges from government-approved 3-star standard hotels to luxury 5-star properties like Le Meridien, depending on your booking preference. Meals are typically served buffet-style at hotels and certified tourist restaurants, featuring a mix of Bhutanese, Indian, Chinese, and Continental cuisine. We provide two bottles of safe drinking water per person per day.

Altitude Information, Acclimatization, and AMS safety
The maximum sleeping altitude is in Thimphu at 2,334 meters (7,657 feet). The highest point visited is Dochula Pass (3,080 meters). Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is highly unlikely at these elevations. However, travelers might experience mild shortness of breath upon arrival. We ensure a well-paced itinerary to allow natural acclimatization.
Internet and Phone connectivity
Most hotels in Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha offer complimentary Wi-Fi, though speeds may be slower than international standards. You can purchase a local Bhutanese SIM card (B-Mobile or TashiCell) at the Paro airport or in Thimphu city for reliable 4G data access throughout the trip.
Currencies acceptable
The Bhutanese currency is the Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged directly to the Indian Rupee (INR). INR denominations up to 500 are widely accepted. US Dollars are accepted at major hotels and larger handicraft shops, but it is highly practical to exchange some currency into Ngultrum at the airport or a bank for small purchases.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is not mandatory but is a deeply appreciated gesture for good service. As a general guideline, consider budgeting around USD 10-15 per day for your guide and USD 8-10 per day for your driver, to be presented in envelopes at the conclusion of your trip.
Area Guidelines
Bhutan is a pristine environment with strict environmental and cultural preservation laws. Buying or selling antiques is strictly prohibited. Smoking in public places is illegal in Bhutan, and the sale of tobacco is heavily regulated; tourists may bring a limited allowance but must pay a heavy import duty.
Photography guidelines and cultural sensitivity
Always ask permission before photographing local people. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main shrines and inner courtyards of dzongs, temples, and monasteries. When visiting religious sites, walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels. Dress conservatively to show respect for the local culture.
How to Book this trip
To secure your booking, contact Himalayan Planet Adventures Pvt. Ltd. via our official website or email. We require a clear passport copy and an initial deposit to process your visa and secure hotel reservations. The remaining balance is payable prior to your arrival as per our standard booking terms.
Trip FAQs
Will I be safe traveling in Bhutan as a solo female traveler?
Absolutely. Bhutan is globally recognized as one of the safest countries for travelers. Crime rates are exceptionally low, and respect for guests is deeply ingrained in the culture. As a female traveler, you will be accompanied by our trusted, professional guides, ensuring a secure, respectful, and highly comfortable experience throughout your entire journey.
Do I need to be super fit for this tour?
Not at all. Most of the trip involves leisurely walks and scenic drives. The only challenging part is the hike to Tiger's Nest on Day 5, but you can take it at your own slow pace, and there is a cafeteria halfway up if you prefer a shorter walk.
Can I use my credit card in Bhutan?
Credit cards are accepted at major hotels and high-end tourist shops, but they often incur a processing fee. We highly recommend carrying cash (USD or Indian Rupees) to exchange into local currency for smaller purchases, cafes, and tipping.
Is the food going to be too spicy for me?
While traditional Bhutanese food, like Ema Datshi (chilies and cheese), is famously spicy, the meals prepared for tourists in hotels and approved restaurants are heavily moderated. You will find plenty of mild Continental, Indian, and Chinese options available at every meal.
Will I get altitude sickness?
It is very rare on this specific route. The highest you will sleep is around 2,334 meters in Thimphu. You might feel a bit out of breath at first, but our itinerary is paced perfectly to let your body adjust without any issues.

Superb
Stunning and breathtaking , awesome view of the Himalayas, This had been my dream to see Mt. Everest from close quarters. I believe Moutain has always inspired me to be strong , bold , and stand tall amidst crisis. The snow clad mountain ranges was looking as though someone had painted in a canvas . I wish I could actually set my foot on them , walk up to the top and say Ahoy I have arrived .

Gokyo Trekking
We had a wonderful time in Nepal. Himalayan Planet and our guide Hari were top organised from the airport pickup to the return flight.
Our adventure started with Hari and our porter via the airport Ramechhap (flights from Kathmandu are cancelled increasingly). Hari was always worried about our well-being and tour changes and wishes were accepted without discussion. The selected teahouses were quite good according to the local standard. The food served in the teahouses was always very good (we only had veggie food ).
Himalayan Planet surprised us with a direct helicopter flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after we had arrived in Lukla two days earlier than planned. We heard later that this was the last flight for two days out of Lukla due to the misty weather.
We can highly recommend Hari as a tour guide. He is funny, knows the Everest area very well and is extremely adaptable and kind.
We thank Himalayan Planet for the great organisation and would like to recommend them warmly.
