Trip Grades
This is a relaxed cultural tour graded as Easy, with one Moderate day hike. The majority of the itinerary involves guided sightseeing with short walks through towns, museums, and temples. The only strenuous activity is the hike to Tiger's Nest, which involves steep, uneven trails.
Physical Requirement and Health
Travelers should be in generally good health and capable of walking for several hours with rest breaks. The Tiger's Nest hike requires a moderate level of cardiovascular fitness, as it involves a steep ascent of approximately 900 meters. Anyone with severe mobility issues or respiratory conditions should consult a physician prior to booking.
Training program
Specific athletic training is not required. However, we recommend incorporating a routine of walking 3 to 5 kilometers, two to three times a week, approximately one month before your arrival. Including stairs or slight inclines in your walks will condition your legs for the monastery hike.
Age Limit
There is no strict age limit for this tour. The itinerary is suitable for multi-generational families. However, parents with very young children or elderly travelers may choose to view Tiger's Nest from the cafeteria viewpoint rather than completing the final steep stair ascent.
Group size
We operate this tour for any group size ranging from a minimum of 1 person (solo traveler) up to a maximum of 25 people. Smaller groups (1 to 8) ensure highly personalized attention, while larger groups are expertly managed with appropriately sized vehicles and additional support.
Best time to visit
The optimal times to visit Bhutan are the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) seasons. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and mild daytime temperatures. Autumn offers exceptionally clear skies for Himalayan views. Winters (December to February) are cold, especially at night, but feature brilliant blue skies. Summers (June to August) coincide with the monsoon, bringing heavy rain and limited mountain visibility.
Visa Information
All tourists (excluding Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian passport holders) require a visa to enter Bhutan. Visas are processed online by Himalayan Planet Adventures prior to your arrival. We will need a clear, color scan of your passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date). The visa fee is included in your package.
Necessary Permits
The Bhutanese government strictly regulates travel to preserve its culture. Your route permits for Thimphu and Paro are arranged by us in advance. You are only required to carry your physical passport; your guide will handle all documentation at regional checkpoints and monument entrances.
Insurance details
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency repatriation, and trip cancellation. Insurance cannot be purchased within Bhutan for international tourists; you must secure a policy in your home country (e.g., through World Nomads, Allianz, or Travelex) prior to travel.
Transportation and/or Domestic Flight
All ground transportation is provided in well-maintained, private vehicles driven by experienced locals.
1-2 Pax: SUV (e.g., Hyundai Tucson or similar)
3-4 Pax: Hyundai H1
5-8 Pax: Toyota HiAce (High Roof)
9-19 Pax: Toyota Coaster Bus (19-seater capacity)
19-25 Pax: Bus
Packaging and Luggage Information
Pack using a layering system, as temperatures fluctuate significantly between morning, midday, and evening. Bring a good quality windproof/waterproof jacket, comfortable daytime walking shoes, and sturdy hiking boots or trail runners for the Tiger's Nest trek. Modest clothing is required for temple visits (long pants or skirts, long sleeves, no hats).
Accommodation, meals, and water
You have the choice of standard 3-star, premium 4-star, or luxury 5-star (Le Meridien) accommodations. All meals are provided. Breakfasts and dinners are typically taken at your hotel, offering a mix of continental, Indian, and Bhutanese cuisine. Lunches are served at approved local restaurants. We provide two bottles of safe, purified drinking water per person, per day.

Altitude Information, Acclimatization, and AMS safety
The maximum sleeping altitude on this trip is 2,334 meters (7,657 feet) in Thimphu. Because this is below the typical threshold for Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), the risk of altitude sickness is exceptionally low. The hike to Tiger's Nest reaches 3,120 meters, but since you sleep at a lower elevation in Paro (2,200m), acclimatization is naturally built into the itinerary.
Internet and Phone connectivity
Most hotels in Paro and Thimphu offer reliable, free Wi-Fi, though speeds may be slower than you are accustomed to. For mobile data, you can purchase a local Bhutanese SIM card (B-Mobile or TashiCell) upon arrival at Paro Airport.
Currencies acceptable and to use
The local currency is the Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN), which is pegged 1:1 to the Indian Rupee (INR). Indian Rupees (in denominations of 500 and below) are widely accepted. US Dollars are also accepted at larger handicraft shops. It is highly recommended to bring clean, crisp USD cash to exchange at the airport or local banks for small purchases.
Tipping Guidelines
While tipping is not mandatory in Bhutan, it is highly expected and serves as a significant portion of the income for those in the tourism sector. A general guideline is USD 10–15 per day for your guide and USD 8–10 per day for your driver, presented in an envelope at the end of the tour.
Area Guidelines
Bhutanese culture is deeply rooted in Vajrayana Buddhism. Show respect by walking clockwise around religious monuments (chortens, Mani walls). Pointing with a single finger is considered rude; use an open palm instead. Public displays of affection should be kept to a minimum.
Photography guidelines and cultural sensitivity
Bhutan offers incredible photographic opportunities, but strict rules apply. Photography and videography are absolutely forbidden inside the main shrines and prayer rooms of Dzongs, temples, and monasteries. Always ask permission before photographing local people, especially monks or the elderly.
How to Book this trip
To secure your booking, contact Himalayan Planet Adventures with your preferred travel dates, accommodation category (3, 4, or 5-star), and a clear copy of your passport. A deposit is required to confirm the tour, secure your SDF payment, and initiate the visa process.
Trip FAQs
Will I be safe traveling in Bhutan as a solo female traveler?
Absolutely. Bhutan is recognized as one of the safest countries in the world for travelers, including solo females. Crime rates are exceptionally low, the culture is deeply respectful, and you will be accompanied by a licensed, professional guide at all times.
Do I need a special level of fitness for this tour?
For the most part, no. The sightseeing is relaxed. The only demanding activity is the hike to Tiger's Nest on Day 3, which takes about 5 hours round trip. If you take your time and stay hydrated, most travelers complete it successfully!
Can I wear shorts and a t-shirt during the trip?
You can wear casual, comfortable clothes while driving or walking around town. However, when visiting Dzongs and temples, strict dress codes apply. You must wear long pants or long skirts, and your shoulders must be completely covered.
Will I get altitude sickness in Paro and Thimphu?
It is highly unlikely. Both Paro and Thimphu sit around 2,200 to 2,300 meters, which is low enough that most people feel perfectly fine. Just drink plenty of water and take it easy on your first day.
Is the Bhutanese food going to be too spicy for me?
The national dish, Ema Datshi, is indeed made of chilies and cheese! However, tourist hotels and restaurants specifically adjust their recipes for international palates, offering mild Bhutanese dishes alongside familiar Continental and Indian options.

Superb
Stunning and breathtaking , awesome view of the Himalayas, This had been my dream to see Mt. Everest from close quarters. I believe Moutain has always inspired me to be strong , bold , and stand tall amidst crisis. The snow clad mountain ranges was looking as though someone had painted in a canvas . I wish I could actually set my foot on them , walk up to the top and say Ahoy I have arrived .

Gokyo Trekking
We had a wonderful time in Nepal. Himalayan Planet and our guide Hari were top organised from the airport pickup to the return flight.
Our adventure started with Hari and our porter via the airport Ramechhap (flights from Kathmandu are cancelled increasingly). Hari was always worried about our well-being and tour changes and wishes were accepted without discussion. The selected teahouses were quite good according to the local standard. The food served in the teahouses was always very good (we only had veggie food ).
Himalayan Planet surprised us with a direct helicopter flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after we had arrived in Lukla two days earlier than planned. We heard later that this was the last flight for two days out of Lukla due to the misty weather.
We can highly recommend Hari as a tour guide. He is funny, knows the Everest area very well and is extremely adaptable and kind.
We thank Himalayan Planet for the great organisation and would like to recommend them warmly.
