Journey Through Tibet - Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour: Fly in / Fly out
The 13-Day Tibet Everest Base Camp Tour is a meticulously crafted journey crossing the high Himalayas to reveal the deep spiritual heritage and raw natural power of the Tibetan plateau. You begin in the vibrant, culturally dense Kathmandu Valley, using the time to explore ancient UNESCO World Heritage sites while our team secures your regional travel permits. A spectacular trans-Himalayan flight then brings you to Lhasa, the historical capital of Tibet. Here, you will acclimatize by walking through centuries of history at the Potala Palace and Jokhang Temple. The journey progresses overland through high-altitude passes, turquoise lakes, and remote monastic towns until you reach the climax of the tour: the North Face of Mount Everest. Designed for travelers seeking cultural depth paired with monumental landscapes, this itinerary prioritizes proper acclimatization, expert local guidance, and logistical excellence.
Route Overview
The journey starts in Kathmandu, Nepal, with dedicated days for cultural tours around the valley and Nagarkot to allow for necessary visa and permit processing. You then take a direct flight over the Himalayan range to Lhasa, Tibet. After three days of exploring Lhasa's spiritual centers, the overland route heads west along the Friendship Highway. You will cross high mountain passes (such as Kamba La), drive past the vibrant Yamdrok Lake, and stop at the historical towns of Gyantse and Shigatse. The route then pushes higher into the Tibetan plateau toward Shegar, before making the final rugged approach to Everest Base Camp (North Face). After witnessing the peak, you trace your steps back to Lhasa for a return flight to Kathmandu, completing a comprehensive loop of the region's most significant cultural and natural landmarks.

Tashilhunpo Monastery and Journey to Shegar
Your morning begins with a comprehensive tour of the Tashilhunpo Monastery in Shigatse. As the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, this sprawling, walled complex is meticulously maintained and features a towering 26-meter gilded statue of the Maitreya (Future) Buddha. After soaking in the grandeur of the monastery, you get back on the Friendship Highway to push further west into the high plateau. The route crosses the Gyatso La Pass, which sits at an impressive 5,220 meters, marking your entry into the Mount Everest National Nature Reserve. The landscape becomes increasingly rugged and desolate as you arrive in the small, dusty settlement of Shegar (New Tingri), your final stop before tomorrow's climb to base camp.
Today brings the absolute climax of your Himalayan journey. You depart Shegar early, driving over the Pang La Pass (5,050m), which offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Himalayan giants, including Makalu, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Everest. You then descend through switchback dirt roads toward the Rongbuk Valley. Arriving at Everest Base Camp, the sheer vertical face of the mountain dominates the entire southern horizon, completely unobstructed by surrounding peaks. You will have ample time to take photographs, visit the nearby Rongbuk Monastery—the highest monastery in the world—and reflect on the immense scale of the highest point on Earth. You will spend the night in a basic guesthouse in the area, sleeping in the shadow of the mountain.
Waking up in the freezing, crisp air of Everest Base Camp, you can watch the sunrise cast a brilliant golden glow over the North Face of the mountain—a truly surreal and humbling experience. After a warm breakfast and final photographs, it is time to leave the extremes of the high Himalayas behind. You board the vehicle for the long, retracing drive back toward civilization. The journey covers vast stretches of the Tibetan plateau, passing through Shigatse once again. Because you are now thoroughly acclimatized, the long drive feels much more comfortable. You arrive back in Lhasa by evening, returning to the comfort of your hotel for a hot shower, a hearty meal, and a well-deserved rest.

Trekking Guide
Everything you need to know
Trip Grades
This tour is graded as "Moderate." While there is no strenuous long-distance trekking involved, the significant altitude requires physical resilience. The itinerary involves long overland drives on paved but winding mountain roads, and several hours of walking each day through monasteries, palaces, and towns at high elevations.
Physical Requirement and Health
Participants should be in good general health with a decent level of cardiovascular fitness. Walking up the stairs of the Potala Palace at 3,656 meters will leave you breathless. Individuals with pre-existing heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions must consult their physician before booking, as extreme altitude limits oxygen intake significantly.
Training program
We recommend starting a mild cardiovascular routine 4-6 weeks prior to arrival. Engaging in brisk walking, swimming, or cycling for 45 minutes to an hour, three times a week, will help your body optimize oxygen use, making the transition to the high Tibetan plateau much smoother.
Age Limit
Due to the extreme altitude at Everest Base Camp (5,200m), we recommend a minimum age of 10 years and a maximum age of 75 years. Older travelers who are physically active and have a medical clearance are welcome, provided they understand the risks associated with high altitudes.
Group size
To maintain a high-quality, personalized experience, our group sizes typically range from a minimum of 2 up to a maximum of 30 passengers. Smaller private group tours are actively encouraged to allow maximum flexibility during daily sightseeing.
Best time to visit
The optimal windows for this tour are Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November). During these months, the skies are generally clear, offering the best visibility for Mount Everest. Summer (July to August) is warmer but brings monsoon clouds that may obscure mountain views. Winter (December to February) is bitterly cold, especially at Everest Base Camp, making travel highly uncomfortable.
Visa Information
A standard Nepal tourist visa can be acquired upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. However, the Tibet Group Visa requires a different process. You must arrive in Kathmandu at least three official working days prior to your flight to Lhasa so our agency can process the visa at the Chinese Embassy in Nepal on your behalf using your original passport.
Necessary Permits
Independent travel is strictly prohibited in Tibet. We will arrange your Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) required to enter the region, as well as the Alien's Travel Permit and Military Permit necessary to proceed beyond Lhasa to Shigatse, Shegar, and Everest Base Camp.
Insurance details
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover emergency medical evacuation up to 6,000 meters, trip cancellation, and flight delays. Global providers such as World Nomads, Global Rescue, or Allianz offer excellent packages. Please purchase this from your home country prior to your departure.
Transportation and/or Flight detail information
The flight between Kathmandu and Lhasa is a breathtaking one-hour trans-Himalayan journey. Ground transportation in Nepal involves private air-conditioned cars, vans, or coasters. In Tibet, we utilize well-maintained, comfortable tourist vehicles suited for the high-altitude highways, ensuring safety and comfort during long driving days.
Packaging and Luggage Information
Pack using a layering system. The daytime sun in Tibet can be intensely warm, while night temperatures, especially at Everest Base Camp, plummet below freezing. Essential items include a high-quality down jacket, thermal base layers, sun protection (sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat), and comfortable, broken-in walking shoes. Keep luggage under 20kg for flight restrictions.
Accommodation, meals, and water during the trip
You will stay in 3-star hotels in Kathmandu. In Lhasa and Shigatse, we provide comfortable 3-star standard Tibetan hotels with modern amenities. Near Everest Base Camp (Tingri/Rongbuk), accommodation transitions to very basic guesthouses with shared facilities. Breakfast is included daily. Always drink bottled, boiled, or purified water; avoid tap water completely.
Altitude Information, Acclimatization, and AMS safety
Altitude Sickness (AMS) is the most significant risk on this trip. We mitigate this by spending three nights in Lhasa (3,656m) before ascending higher. Symptoms like mild headaches and fatigue are normal. Drink 3-4 liters of water daily, avoid alcohol, and move slowly. Our guides are trained to monitor symptoms and carry emergency oxygen in the vehicles.
Internet and Phone connectivity
Kathmandu offers excellent Wi-Fi in hotels and 4G mobile networks. In Tibet, major hotels in Lhasa and Shigatse provide Wi-Fi, though access to platforms like Google, WhatsApp, and Facebook is blocked without a pre-installed VPN. Connectivity becomes very spotty to non-existent as you approach Everest Base Camp.
Currencies acceptable
In Nepal, the Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is used. In Tibet, the currency is the Chinese Yuan (RMB). It is highly recommended to exchange USD or Euros into Yuan while in Lhasa, as smaller towns on the route to Everest will not accept foreign currency or credit cards. ATMs are available in Lhasa and Shigatse but are unreliable further west.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is not culturally mandatory but is deeply appreciated as a reward for excellent service. We recommend budgeting approximately USD 10-15 per day for your Tibetan guide and USD 5-10 per day for your driver, to be pooled and distributed at the end of the Tibet segment.
Area Guidelines
Tibet is a highly sensitive autonomous region. Travelers must remain with their guide at all times during official sightseeing. Venturing into restricted areas independently or straying from the group itinerary is not permitted and can result in immediate deportation.
Photography guidelines and cultural sensitivity
Always ask permission before photographing local people, especially monks or pilgrims. Photography is strictly forbidden inside most chapels of the Potala Palace and other sacred monastic shrines. Do not wear revealing clothing; ensure shoulders and knees are covered. Always walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas and temples.
How to Book this trip
Booking with Himalayan Planet Adventures is straightforward. Contact our team with your preferred dates. We require a clear passport scan at least 25 days before the travel date to initiate the permit process. A deposit secures your spot, with the remaining balance due upon/before your arrival in Kathmandu.
Trip FAQs
Will I be safe traveling as a solo female traveler in Tibet and Nepal?
Absolutely. Both Nepal and Tibet are highly respected for their hospitality and safety towards foreign visitors. Because you are constantly accompanied by our professional, vetted local guides and travel in a structured group, the risk of harassment or crime is incredibly low. We ensure all your hotel rooms are secure and provide a comfortable, respectful environment throughout the journey.
Do I need to be a professional trekker to go to Everest Base Camp in Tibet?
Not at all! Unlike the Nepal side, which requires a rigorous two-week trek, the Tibet side of Everest Base Camp is accessible by road. You will be driven almost directly to the camp. The main challenge is adjusting to the high altitude, not the physical exertion of trekking.
Will the altitude sickness ruin my trip?
It doesn't have to. We intentionally built multiple acclimatization days into the Lhasa portion of the itinerary. If you stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and communicate openly with your guide about any headaches or nausea, your body will naturally adjust. We also carry emergency oxygen in our vehicles just in case.
Can I get my Tibet visa on my own?
No, the Chinese government does not issue independent Tibet travel permits. Our agency handles all the complex paperwork for the Tibet Travel Permit and the Group Visa from the embassy in Kathmandu. You need to arrive in Nepal a few days early and hand us your passport.
Do I need a sleeping bag for the Everest Base Camp night?
The guesthouses near EBC are basic and provide blankets, but because temperatures drop significantly below freezing at night, bringing a high-quality sleeping bag adds a crucial layer of comfort and warmth. If you don't have one, you can easily rent a clean sleeping bag in Kathmandu before the flight.
Watching the sunrise at Nagarkot was absolutely breathtaking, and our guide made the trek smooth and informative. During the journey, we were able to enjoy the charming villages, stunning natural scenery, and beautiful temples along the way. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Nepal’s culture, nature, and temples, and was attentive and professional throughout the trek.
The transportation and overall organization were reliable, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Overall, it was a well-organized and memorable trek, and I highly recommend their guiding services.

Stunning and breathtaking , awesome view of the Himalayas, This had been my dream to see Mt. Everest from close quarters. I believe Moutain has always inspired me to be strong , bold , and stand tall amidst crisis. The snow clad mountain ranges was looking as though someone had painted in a canvas . Gokyo Trekking
We had a wonderful time in Nepal. Himalayan Planet and our guide Hari were top organised from the airport pickup to the return flight.
Our adventure started with Hari and our porter via the airport Ramechhap (flights from Kathmandu are cancelled increasingly). Hari was always worried about our well-being and tour changes and wishes were accepted without discussion. The selected teahouses were quite good according to the local standard. The food served in the teahouses was always very good (we only had veggie food ).
Himalayan Planet surprised us with a direct helicopter flight from Lukla to Kathmandu after we had arrived in Lukla two days earlier than planned. We heard later that this was the last flight for two days out of Lukla due to the misty weather.
We can highly recommend Hari as a tour guide. He is funny, knows the Everest area very well and is extremely adaptable and kind.
We thank Himalayan Planet for the great organisation and would like to recommend them warmly.
