Journey Through 15 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

The 15 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a quintessential Himalayan journey that guides you deep into the heart of the Annapurna massif. This route combines rich cultural immersion with striking high-altitude geography. You will walk through vibrant rhododendron forests, terraced agricultural hillsides, and traditional highland villages before arriving at the high glacial basin known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. By targeting gradual acclimatization and pacing, this Annapurna Base Camp tour package allows trekkers to safely experience the dramatic alpine environment while relying on the established tea house trekking infrastructure.

Route Overview

Your journey starts in the historic Kathmandu Valley before moving west to the lakeside city of Pokhara. From Pokhara, a short drive brings you to Nayapul, the official trailhead. The path climbs steadily through the foothills, passing Tikhedhunga and ascending the famous stone steps to Ghorepani. After a sunrise hike to Poon Hill, the trail weaves through Tadapani and descends to the Modi Khola river before climbing up to Chhomrong. From this major Gurung settlement, the route pushes northward into the narrow Modi Khola gorge, passing through Dovan and Deurali, and finally opening up into the magnificent Annapurna Sanctuary at base camp. The return route loops back through Bamboo and Jhinu Danda before concluding back in Nayapul and Pokhara.

Peaks and sites seen during the trip

  • Annapurna I (8,091m): The tenth highest mountain in the world and the crown jewel of the sanctuary, displaying a massive, avalanche-prone south face.
  • Mount Machhapuchhre (6,993m): Known as "Fishtail" due to its distinct twin peaks. It is a sacred, unclimbed mountain that dominates the skyline throughout the trek.
  • Hiunchuli (6,441m) & Annapurna South (7,219m): These formidable peaks form the primary barrier guarding the entrance to the Annapurna Sanctuary.
  • Poon Hill (3,210m): A premier vantage point offering unobstructed, panoramic sunrise views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.
  • Jhinu Hot Springs: Natural geothermal pools located on the banks of the Modi Khola river, traditionally used for muscle recovery and relaxation.

Drive to Nayapul and trek to Tikhedhunga

Today, after breakfast, we drive to Nayapul (New Bridge) for about 2 hours by our private cars with the driver to start our trek. From Nayapul, we follow the south bank of the river. After several hours, we pass through the sub-tropical valley forests, sometimes on the carved trail on the side of the cliff. We are continuing and crossing the Modi Khola River via a suspension bridge to the village of Tikhedhunga for the night. If the time allows, we can trek further along the trail, quite steep at times, and reach Ulleri by late afternoon for the overnight, ensuring your comfort and convenience throughout the journey and making you feel reassured that you are well taken care of. This initial day of walking is intentionally paced to help your muscles adapt to the trail conditions.

    Trek to Ghorepani

We make our ascent to the Ghorepani village. The name Ghorepani in Nepali means horse water, owing to its role as an important campsite for the traders before it became a trekker's teahouse. Ghorepani is an interesting place with small shops and stalls selling local products and crafts. The town has two parts: one is a saddle and the other is a few hundred feet lower. Since Ghorepani lies relatively higher than a previous stop, we begin to feel the chilly weather, especially in the evenings. We overnight in Ghorepani with a beautiful view of the Annapurna & Dhaulagiri mountain range, a sight that will leave you awe-inspired and amazed at the beauty of nature.

As the sun breaks over the horizon, it paints the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and Machhapuchhre in brilliant shades of gold and pink. After absorbing this world-class panorama, descend back to Ghorepani for a well-earned breakfast. Pack your bags and continue the trek, climbing a high ridge that offers more continuous mountain views before plunging into a damp, moss-covered pine and rhododendron forest. The trail features several steep descents and ascents before finally arriving at the peaceful forest clearing of Tadapani.

Departing Tadapani, the trail drops sharply through dense, shadowy forests down to the Kimrong Khola river. After crossing a suspension bridge, you will face a steep, switchbacking ascent up the opposite side of the valley to the village of Gurjung. The path then contours gently around the hillside, offering sweeping views of the upper Modi Khola valley, before arriving at Chhomrong. Chhomrong is the largest and most significant Gurung settlement on this route, spreading beautifully across the mountainside. From your teahouse window, you will have an incredibly dominant, unobstructed view of Annapurna South and the jagged peak of Mount Machhapuchhre directly across the gorge.

From Sinuwa, the trail enters the deep, narrow V-shaped gorge of the upper Modi Khola. You are now officially entering the Annapurna Sanctuary restricted zone. The path weaves through dense, unbroken stands of bamboo, oak, and fern forests. The temperature drops noticeably as you pass through the damp settlement of Dovan and continue climbing steadily alongside the roaring glacial river until you reach the small cluster of teahouses known as Himalaya.

Trek to Annapurna Base Camp (Annapurna Sanctuary)

This is the pinnacle of the itinerary. The trees thin out into sparse alpine scrub as you hike past the Hinku Cave and tackle the avalanche-prone moraine trails leading to Deurali. As you push past Machhapuchhre Base Camp (MBC), the narrow gorge dramatically widens, revealing the breathtaking Annapurna Sanctuary. The final push to Annapurna Base Camp takes you across a high-altitude glacial basin with sparse vegetation. Upon arriving at the ABC signboards at 4,130 meters, you are rewarded with a mind-blowing, 360-degree amphitheater of vertical ice and rock, dominated by the colossal, near-vertical South Face of Annapurna I. Wake up early to witness the sun illuminating the sanctuary walls, an experience that highlights the raw scale of the Himalayas. After taking your final photographs at base camp and enjoying a hot breakfast, it is time to turn around and begin the long descent. Because you are dropping in elevation, your breathing will become significantly easier, allowing you to cover ground quickly. You will retrace your steps past MBC, Deurali, and Himalaya, watching the landscape shift from barren glacial moraine back into the lush, green bamboo forests. The day concludes in the deeply shaded, riverside settlement of Bamboo, providing a warmer and highly oxygenated night of sleep.

After stopping for a hearty lunch and enjoying the familiar views of Annapurna South, the trail diverts from the incoming route. You will follow a steep, descending path straight down the hillside to the settlement of Jhinu Danda. After checking into your room, take a 20-minute walk down to the Modi Khola riverbanks to soak your tired legs in the therapeutic, natural thermal hot springs.

Trekking Guide

Everything you need to know

Climbing Grades (For treks, climbs, and expeditions)

This is classified as a moderate trekking route. It involves multi-day walking over steep, uneven terrain, including thousands of stone steps. No technical climbing gear, ropes, or prior mountaineering experience are required.

Physical Requirement and Health

Trekkers should be prepared to walk 5 to 7 hours daily with a light daypack. A moderate level of physical fitness is necessary. Individuals with pre-existing heart or lung conditions must consult a physician before joining.

Training program (before joining)

Begin a physical conditioning program 6 to 8 weeks before your arrival. Focus on cardiovascular endurance (running, cycling, or swimming) and leg strength. Practice hiking on uneven trails for several hours at a time while carrying a 5kg backpack to simulate trail conditions.

Age Limit

There is no strict upper age limit for physically fit and active individuals. The minimum recommended age is 10 years old, provided the child has prior hiking experience and is accompanied by a guardian.

Group size (Min. to Max.) for best experience

We operate with a minimum of 1 person (solo travelers are welcome) and a maximum of 20 people per group to ensure personalized attention, safety, and minimized environmental impact on the trails.

Best time to visit and weather conditions

Spring (March to May) offers blooming rhododendrons, clear mornings, and mild temperatures, though afternoons can be cloudy. Autumn (September to November) provides the clearest skies, stable weather, and excellent mountain visibility. Monsoon (June to August) brings heavy rain and leeches, while Winter (December to February) guarantees clear but bitterly cold conditions with heavy snow at higher elevations.

Visa Information

Most foreign nationals can obtain a 15, 30, or 90-day tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will need a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity) and the applicable visa fee in cash (USD or major currency).

Necessary Permits

All trekkers require an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit and a Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) card. Himalayan Planet Adventures processes these permits for you; fees are structured differently for SAARC nationals versus other foreign nationals.

Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking up to 5,000 meters and include provisions for emergency helicopter evacuation and medical expenses. Purchase this in your home country before departure.

Transportation and/or Domestic Flight

The package includes tourist bus/private vehicle transportation between Kathmandu and Pokhara. Private vehicles will transfer you between Pokhara and the Nayapul trailhead. Optional domestic flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara (25 minutes) can be arranged upon request.

Packaging and Luggage Information

Pack in layers. Duffel bag for your main gear will be carried by porters. You will only need to carry a small 20-30L daypack for daily essentials like water, a camera, and a fleece. The weight limit for the duffel bag is 12.5kg per person.

Porter service and guidelines

We assign one porter for every two trekkers. Porters carry a maximum combined weight of 25kg (12.5kg per trekker). We strictly adhere to fair-trade ethical trekking guidelines, ensuring all porters are well-equipped, insured, and paid fairly.

Accommodation, meals, and water during the trip

City stays feature 3-star to 5-star hotel accommodations with breakfast. On the trail, you will sleep in basic but clean teahouses (twin-sharing). The package includes full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) during the trek. Always treat tap water with iodine tablets or a SteriPEN; do not buy single-use plastic bottles.

Altitude Information, Acclimatization, and AMS safety

The itinerary is designed for gradual elevation gain to mitigate Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You will reach a maximum altitude of 4,130m. Our guides are trained in wilderness first aid and carry oxygen saturation monitors to check your acclimatization daily.

Internet and Phone connectivity

Cellular networks (NTC and Ncell) have coverage up to Chhomrong, though signals fluctuate. Beyond Chhomrong, most teahouses offer paid Wi-Fi connectivity via satellite, though speeds are generally slow and weather-dependent.

Currencies acceptable and to use

Bring Nepalese Rupees (NPR) on the trek. Teahouses do not accept foreign currency or credit cards. Withdraw enough cash in Kathmandu or Pokhara to cover personal expenses like hot showers, device charging, and extra snacks.

Tipping Guidelines

Tipping is customary and forms a significant part of the income for guides and porters. A general guideline is to pool roughly 10-15% of the total trip cost among the crew at the end of the trek, handed out during a farewell dinner in Pokhara or Kathmandu.

Area Guidelines

The Annapurna region is a protected conservation area. Practice "Leave No Trace" principles. Carry all non-combustible trash back to Pokhara. Do not pick flora, disturb wildlife, or purchase items made from endangered species.

Photography guidelines and cultural sensitivity

Always ask for permission before photographing local residents or religious ceremonies. Dress modestly; avoid revealing clothing. When walking past mani walls or Buddhist stupas, always pass them on the right side.

15 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

While many companies offer standard backpacker packages, specialized luxury trekking operators in Nepal like Himalayan Planet Adventures focus entirely on high-end logistics. We distinguish ourselves by providing a truly "seamless" experience. From the moment you land, you will enjoy five-star hospitality in Kathmandu and exclusive access to the absolute best available mountain lodges on the trail.

As our Founder & Managing Director, Nabaraj Thapa, always emphasizes, true luxury lies in personalized service. We are widely considered the best trekking company in Nepal and a premier luxury tour operator in Kathmandu because we refuse to compromise on your comfort. Whether you are trekking in Nepal or taking a cultural tour through Bhutan and Tibet, our VIP trekking packages feature hand-picked private guides, luxury transfers, and exclusive stays at world-class properties.

When booking flights to Kathmandu, Nepal, aim to land at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) at least one full day before your trip begins. This gives you time to shake off the jet lag, and attend a private pre-trip briefing and gear check at our office to ensure you are 100% prepared.

Generally, if you book Tours in Nepal, no extra day is necessary. But if you are going for Treks and Expedition, we strongly advise adding at least 1 extra day in Kathmandu as a contingency buffer at the very end of your itinerary so you never have to stress about missing your flight’s home!

Yes! Every single English speaking tour/trekking/nature/hiking guide in Nepal employed by Himalayan Planet Adventures is government-certified and highly fluent. They aren't just there to show you the trail; they are rigorously trained to communicate technical safety details and share rich, local cultural stories so you truly connect with the Himalayas.

Of course. We know our luxury travelers come from all over the globe. If you prefer, we can easily provide an experienced German speaking guide in Nepal, or a Spanish speaking guide in Nepal (as well as French and Chinese experts). Just let us know your preferred language when booking, and we will arrange it for a small additional premium to ensure you feel completely at home!

  • The ultimate hiking vacation with an incredible crew

Just returned from the 15-day Annapurna Base Camp trek and I am still on a high! Himalayan Planet Adventures knocked it out of the park. My wife and I are avid hikers, but we had never tackled anything at this altitude. The agency was incredible at managing our expectations and preparing us for the journey. Our guide, Madan, was the absolute MVP. He seemed to know every single person on the trail, which meant we always got the best rooms at the tea houses and the warmest spots by the fire in the dining halls. The hike up through the Modi Khola gorge is spectacular, with waterfalls cascading down hundreds of feet. We took our time, enjoyed the incredible dal bhat for lunch every day, and slowly made our way into the sanctuary. Standing at ABC with the prayer flags flapping in the wind and glaciers rumbling in the distance was a profound experience. The logistics in Kathmandu and Pokhara were also handled seamlessly. We felt safe, well-cared for, and completely immersed. 10/10!

  • The ultimate trekking experience with top tier planning

Himalayan Planet Adventures delivered the ultimate trekking experience for my wife and me. The 15-day Annapurna Base Camp itinerary is fantastic. It builds up beautifully, starting with the cultural buzz of Kathmandu, relaxing by the lake in Pokhara, and then the stunning progression into the mountains. We trekked in October, and the weather was perfect. Our guide was phenomenal—he had a great sense of humor and a deep respect for the mountains. He taught us so much about the local ecology and the history of the different ethnic groups living in the Annapurna region. The food on the trek was a pleasant surprise; the Dal Bhat power really does keep you going for 24 hours! Arriving at the base camp is a feeling of immense accomplishment. The 360-degree view of the Annapurna massif is staggering, and seeing the glacier up close is incredible. The descent via the Jhinu hot springs was the perfect way to soothe our tired muscles before heading back to civilization. I highly recommend this agency for their professionalism, warmth, and excellent logistical planning.

  • A deeply peaceful and well-managed walking holiday

The majestic scenery of the Himalayas is something you have to see with your own eyes, and I am so glad I chose Himalayan Planet Adventures for this journey. From the moment I contacted them from Kyoto, their communication was flawless. The 15-day schedule for the Annapurna Base Camp was perfectly balanced. We had plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara before starting the hike. The trail itself is immaculately maintained. Walking through the Modi Khola valley, listening to the rushing river below, was incredibly peaceful. Our guide was very mindful of my pace, reminding me to walk slowly, which helped me avoid any altitude sickness entirely. Waking up at ABC surrounded by towering walls of ice and rock was deeply spiritual. The golden morning light on Annapurna South is etched into my mind. I was also very touched by how respectfully the company treats its staff. The porters were well-equipped and happy, which is very important to me. This trip was a 100% success thanks to their excellent service.

  • A physically demanding but incredibly rewarding trek

We just got back from an incredible 15 days in Nepal. Booking with Himalayan Planet Adventures was super straightforward. I had tons of questions about gear and altitude sickness before we left, and their email responses were always prompt and reassuring. The trek itself was tough but so rewarding. The day we hiked up to Chhomrong was a serious leg-burner with all those steps, but our guide was fantastic at keeping our spirits high with jokes and local riddles. We loved the tea house culture. You arrive tired, grab a hot lemon tea, and sit around swapping stories with folks from all over the world. The morning we reached Annapurna Base Camp, the sky was crystal clear. Watching the sun hit the top of Annapurna I and slowly light up the entire amphitheater of mountains is a memory I will cherish forever. On the way down, soaking our sore muscles in the Jhinu Danda hot springs was exactly what we needed. A massive thank you to our porters who worked tirelessly. Ten out of ten experience!
